Department of Family and Children Services

Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS) suggests the following guidelines:

When determining if a child is old enough and mature enough to be left without adult supervision. Keep in mind that each child is different. In addition to the minimum supervision guidelines, parents, guardians and adults have to consider child-specific factors such as personality, developmental progress, environment and maturity when deciding if a child is ready to accomplish activities with little or no supervision.

  • Children eight years or younger should not be left alone
  • Children between the ages of nine years and twelve years, based on level of maturity, may be left alone for brief  periods of time (less than two hours)
  • Children thirteen years and older, who are at an adequate level of maturity, may be left alone and may perform the role of babysitter, as authorized by the parent, for up to twelve hours.

GA Milestones
The state of Georgia will submit a waiver to the U.S. Department of Education for the suspension of the 2020-21 Georgia Milestones assessment.
100% of testing for the Georgia Milestones will be conducted online at Redan Middle School.  Click on the icon below for access to practice tests and to become familiar with the testing platform students will use.
The items on the demonstration tests are general and are organized into three grade bands: Grades 3 – 5, Grades 6 – 8, and High School in the content areas of English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. The items do not necessarily represent the specific grade-level content that students learn daily in their classrooms. The primary purpose is to let students experience, firsthand, the functionality of the online testing platform. The sample tests are not graded.
